Give to the Veterinary Care Fund to Help Bunnies Like Napoleon

A young white rabbit with red eyes named Napoleon arrived at OHRR with his three siblings in June 2025. They were being used in a vet tech class to practice giving anesthesia. If no one was willing to take these rabbits, their owner (a breeder) said he was taking them to a meat farm. Thanks to a caring vet tech who stepped in and informed us about their sad fate, we made space for them and brought them in immediately.

Napoleon’s breed, the New Zealand, is unfortunately used frequently for meat and animal testing. We are very happy and relieved that these bunnies had another chance. We loved interacting with them and seeing them blossom and learn to trust.

When they lived at the OHRR Adoption Center, Napoleon and his siblings were housed separately in our playroom. These bunnies were full of energy! They put their paws up on the pens for attention whenever we came into the room. But Napoleon seemed much more “wired” than the other rabbits. Even after he was neutered, he was always overly eager, showed a lot of pent-up energy, and had an anxious demeanor. We tried putting him into an even bigger 4’x6’ space, which helped a little, but there was clearly something unusual about his behavior.

We quickly made a vet appointment for him. Napoleon was diagnosed with anxiety by our veterinarian. He received calming medication daily while in our care, including Gabapentin and was later prescribed Trazodone. He responded very well to the treatment.

Great news! Napoleon is now in a loving home, trying out a bond with his potential BBFF (Best Bunny Friend Forever), Birch. And best of all, his new home has lots of space for him to run and play to help relieve his anxiety! We are so happy for him!

By giving to the OHRR Vet Care Fund, you help us care for more than 125 rabbits who come into our rescue every year – and assure that they are spayed or neutered and receive the care they need. All OHRR bunnies also receive the RHDV2 vaccination. Your contribution will be matched 1:1 by four generous OHRR donors. The bunnies thank you for your support!
